Transnational commerce,
full speed ahead.

Since 1881, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has been driving economic growth by connecting communities and businesses. Following the combination of Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Railway in 2023, CPKC became the first and only single-line rail network bridging Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The company manages more than 20,000 miles of railroad with the help of 14,000 employees.

Along with broader organizational changes came an opportunity to reassess technology needs. Leadership chose Apple devices and services to build a better employee experience. iPad powers faster, smoother shipping operations and provides higher job satisfaction to field workers — leading to reduced employee turnover.

“Apple technology helped us create the velocity we needed to drive growth. We are improving our conductors’ experience with real-time decision capabilities, which is in turn improving our customer experience.”
Pamela Arpin,
SVP and CIO, CPKC

Six thousand CPKC field workers use Apple devices daily, and every conductor receives their own iPad. Custom apps have replaced analog systems, meaning tasks that took 12 minutes now zip by in 30 seconds. In the past, conductors waited to reach the train yard to reconcile data with the main system, but with iPad, updates happen in real time.

To ensure compatibility with existing systems and provide the best user experience, CPKC chose to develop a custom app. The process was fast and easy using Swift and SwiftUI on Mac, allowing the team to create a prototype in just two weeks. They found that native apps developed with Swift were more stable than other web-based solutions and languages. And the Apple platform met their stringent security standards, with built-in features to encrypt data and monitor threats remotely.

Using custom apps with iPad enhanced CPKC’s ability to execute on Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), a model that ensures the right resources like cars and crews are deployed efficiently. With this schedule-driven model, CPKC is able to maximize its assets and reduce downtime. Conductors have real-time data in hand on iPad, so they can manage each car and build trains based on weight, destination, route, cargo, and urgency. They’re more accurate and efficient, now offering full visibility on delivery status for customers.

Employee safety is a top priority. With iPad, conductors quickly reference safety bulletins and timetables instead of scouring thick paper binders — making critical decisions faster. And with access to operational data, they can see exact details for hazardous materials and share that information with first responders in an emergency.

Using iPad, Mac, and custom apps, CPKC’s employees are safer and more efficient. And they’re doing what they do best — delivering over 28 million tons of goods every year that people rely on.

“The Apple platform enabled us to integrate new apps with our legacy system, creating the next generation of Precision Scheduled Railroading.”

AVP Applications and Digital Services, Assistant CIO, CPKC
