Government - Success Stories - Energy Queensland

Energy Queensland, Australia

Electrifying innovation. With Apple.

Energy Queensland is the largest government-owned electricity provider in Australia. It was established in 2016 through the merger of four energy companies to bring greater efficiency and reliability to the people of Queensland. Today, the company supplies power to over 2.3 million people, serving an area two and a half times larger than the U.S. state of Texas.

2.3M+ customers
9.5K+ employees
15.5K+ Apple devices

Combining four separate technology systems was one of the top priorities. Energy Queensland needed to create an integrated approach that would upgrade its capabilities, improve safety for more than 6,000 field workers, and set the stage for future innovation. Apple brought the perfect solution — a connected ecosystem of reliable devices and streamlined IT. This resulted in increased productivity and safety for teams, and improved security for critical infrastructure.

Energy Queensland has transformed its workforce with over 15,500 Apple devices, managed seamlessly through Apple Business Manager and its MDM (mobile device management) solution. Apple enables remote, zero-touch upgrades, robust security configurations that meet strict internal standards, and an overview of fleet health. For employees, the Telstra Loop app offers a more personalized and connected upgrade service. When combined, these tools create significant operational efficiencies.

“Apple devices are creating enormous efficiencies while keeping our people safe.”
Paul Jordon,
Chief Operating Officer, Energy Queensland

Energy Queensland’s leadership knew that devices are best used and accepted when they are personally enabled. Empowering employees to personalize their devices — while adhering to security standards — helps them stay connected to crews and loved ones through built-in apps like Messages and FaceTime. And a selection of third-party enterprise apps supports business communications.

By developing custom apps in Swift, Energy Queensland is taking safety and efficiency to the next level. The Notifications Hub is a custom app that pushes alerts with crucial updates to teams right when they’re needed. The HazChat app helps crews prepare daily for all conditions and supports the management of hazards in real time. And the LVCM app ensures compliance so technicians can run over 60,000 switchboard tests each year, spotting issues early and lowering incident rates. By accessing data in the moment, field workers can make safer, more accurate decisions. Data collection also allows the business to make critical long-term decisions.

Energy Queensland also faces the challenge of natural disasters — up to four cyclones a year can wipe out power across regions. With field workers and control teams all on the Apple platform, they’re more streamlined and productive, restoring power faster. To further improve response times, digital teams are exploring Apple Vision Pro. They remotely assess sites with drone footage and 3D spatial imagery, in order to relay critical data to field workers in real time. The goal is to get communities powered up faster and safer.

With robust devices and efficient processes from top to bottom, Energy Queensland uses Apple to help keep more than 9,500 employees productive and safe — while providing power to over 2.3 million customers.

“Innovation is central to the future of Energy Queensland. The Apple platform allows us to be more efficient while innovating in everything we do — to keep the lights on.”
Justin McIntosh,
Digital Workplace and Telco Platform Manager, Energy Queensland
